The Suite, At Sunrise

Espresso, figs, and a brass tray on a balcony you'll remember longer than the trip.

A Mediterranean hotel suite terrace at sunrise with a cream linen daybed, a brass tray of espresso and figs, billowing white curtains and terracotta pots of olive trees with the sea beyond.

The good hotels make their case in the first ten minutes. The light through the curtains, the weight of the door, the espresso that arrives without being asked.

A great suite earns the trip on its own. Choose the one with the smaller bed and the larger terrace.

Skip the restaurant on the first morning. Order to the room — espresso, fresh figs, a single croissant — and take it on the balcony before the city is awake.

If the hotel does it right, you will return for the terrace, not the city.
